The thing I’d add is that worse-before-better isn’t one phenomenon, and that’s what makes it so hard to self-manage.
Sometimes it’s irritation from movement that is genuinely helping. Sometimes it’s a signal the dose was too much for that week. And occasionally it’s something that needs looking at rather than waiting out. From the inside, those three can feel fairly similar.
The ones I’d never wait out: weakness that is getting worse rather than better, numbness in the saddle area, or any change in bladder or bowel control. Those are uncommon, and that’s exactly why I’d rather someone call and be told it’s nothing than sit with it across a weekend.
You did, and I should have said so. The piece covers it properly.
I think I was writing to the person who lands on a note like this at eleven at night and never gets as far as the article. Thanks for being gracious about it.
Great article. I'd love to add from my own experience that seeing an experienced chiropractor can be very helpful in easing the pain and getting back into movement.
Hi Gaia, I was sure I’d replied to your comment but now I don’t see it. Thank you for sharing this. Absolutely - a good chiropractor is often worth seeing before starting a longer term exercise programme with a qualified PT.

Thank you for your comment ☺️ I did mention all that in the piece, but it's good to have it reiterated again as a highlight ☺️
